Valdai Club experts are preparing a guide for navigating a multipolar reality. However, this task is far from simple. Anastasia Likhacheva, Dean of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at the Higher School of Economics, emphasized in an interview with URA.RU that the path forward is complicated by both the US position and the caution of countries in the Global South.
According to Likhacheva, the United States is not prepared to share the role of global leader with either Russia or China. Meanwhile, states in the Global South, which have verbally supported Vladimir Putin's idea of multipolarity, are in no rush to fully join either of these three.
Discussion of multipolarity has been going on for a long time. Back in 2007, in his famous Munich speech, President Vladimir Putin declared that the unipolar model had no future. But the question remains: what would a sustainable world look like?
"In my opinion, the question now is not about what is better and what would be useful for us to strive for, or how many poles—these are always speculative constructs," the expert stated.
She also added that it is more important to understand what to do with the number of poles and their capabilities that have already been established.
According to the expert, multipolarity in itself does not guarantee harmony. While it is superior to unipolarity from a scientific and political perspective, it also brings new challenges.
